Bridging a continental divide: Women living positively across Africa reach out to advocate for change

It is important that we understand that when women come from the grassroots and represent their country, constituency, village, they come with a message from many voices.

If women educate themselves and stand together, have a platform such as international conferences such as AWID then we can speak for ourselves not as government or an organization led by men . As women we will continue to fight for the right to be heard, be second to men’s issues and the stigma of being HIV positive will no go away. We need to educate young women, stand by them. We must continue to mobilize and get access to resources from funders that we can channel in the right direction – not where the donors think the money should go.

Women need to continue to educate themselves about sexual education, STI’s, access to testing, the female condom, we must put our issues on the agenda within government. Learn from successful women’s movements of the past. Continue to advocate the issues that are important to us. Education is key to our success. We are women with a disease that is all it is. We are strong, educated, smart, proud women who don’t have to wait for death to come because there is life to live.
