Gender Action recently sent a letter to President Obama, expressing dire concerns that the largest U.S. tax-payer funded assistance for Haiti does not address escalating rapes and other gender based violence and is indebting poor Haitians.

Today, as the United Nations Human Rights Council gathers in Geneva, its representatives will hear testimony from Malya Villard-Appolon, a Haitian women’s rights activist and MADRE partner who has lived in the camps for displaced people since the earthquake destroyed her home in January. Ms. Appolon, a leader of KOFAVIV, a Haitian grassroots women’s organization, has witnessed the skyrocketing incidence of rape in the camps and the lack of a coordinated or effective response to these persistent threats.

But, coordinating aid is about brokering a larger vision for women in Haiti. While the issues of governance, accountability and transparency are essential in the relief and recovery efforts, it must align with efforts to engage communities and support grassroots women's organizations to sustain their involvement both in the short and long term.
