Gender Action recently sent a letter to President Obama, expressing dire concerns that the largest U.S. tax-payer funded assistance for Haiti does not address escalating rapes and other gender based violence and is indebting poor Haitians.

Today, as the United Nations Human Rights Council gathers in Geneva, its representatives will hear testimony from Malya Villard-Appolon, a Haitian women’s rights activist and MADRE partner who has lived in the camps for displaced people since the earthquake destroyed her home in January. Ms. Appolon, a leader of KOFAVIV, a Haitian grassroots women’s organization, has witnessed the skyrocketing incidence of rape in the camps and the lack of a coordinated or effective response to these persistent threats.

As Haiti’s earthquake toppled buildings, it also toppled social structures that provided Haitian women some protection against sexual violence.

CIVICUS and its partners, African Monitor, Trust Africa, the Southern Africa Trust, Charity Aid Foundation (CAF) Southern Africa, the South African Red Cross Society; the National Welfare Forum; and Ivan May through 1485 Radio Today on 1484 AM in Jozi and through SADC (also DStv 169), and the Synergos Institute have agreed to join what is known as the Africa for Haiti Project and to help in co-ordinating efforts.

The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance for governments, commercial enterprises, NGOs, civil society organisations and other entities considering sending donations to Haiti in support of the emergency response to the earthquake.

Unfortunately, natural disasters are not new in that Caribbean country, which was impacted in 2008 by hurricanes Hanna and Ike.

Many thanks for all of your contributions to any and all organizations that are providing support to the people of Haiti. These are greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, in many camps essentials such as food and clothing are not yet widely available, especially for women and children.

The outpour of international aid that Haiti has received within the last week and messages of solidarity are intrinsic to helping the Haitian community build back better. But, coordinating aid is about brokering a larger vision for women in Haiti. While the issues of governance, accountability and transparency are essential in the relief and recovery efforts, it must align with efforts to engage communities and support grassroots women's organizations to sustain their involvement both in the short and long term.
