CRISIS IN HAITI: STRENGTHENING SOLIDARITY THROUGH INFORMATION PROVISION
Only two short years after hurricanes devastated Haiti, on Tuesday, 12 January 2010 a 7.0 earthquake devastated the nation's capital of Port-Au-Prince
This has been the most devastating earthquake experienced on the island in the past 200 years. The current death toll is at approximately 100,000, and with thousands more injured and displaced, Haiti is now a nation in ruins.
The international community has displayed an outpouring of solidarity in the form of rapid mobilization of aid, search and rescue missions and disaster relief. Feminist organizations have also rallied to mobilize and support the victims of the tragedy.
Here at AWID, we are supporting feminist contributions to relief efforts in Haiti by fostering awareness about what women's organizations are doing on the ground in Haiti and in other parts of the world. This information will contribute to strengthening solidarity though news bulletins and information available here on our website.
AWID is also promoting opening spaces that give visibility and a voice to the needs, and the realities of Haitian women not only during this humanitarian catastrophe but also on a long term basis.
This special section on our website is designed to provide you with a wide range of information on how the crisis in Haiti is impacting women and women's rights and how you can act in solidarity with the women, men and children of Haiti.
