On July 15, 2008, WIELD Foundation changed its name to Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa (Moremi Initiative). The name change is to reflect the renewed commitment to women’s leadership in Africa and the expansion of its programs.

The one hour sit-in organized by the Nationality Campaign coordinators and activists from CRTD-A on Thursday July 24, 2008 was remarkably successful. Sixty participants gathered outside the Lebanese Cabinet offices to call on the new government to reform the nationality code so women can confer their nationality to their foreign husbands and children.

On the International Day of Peace, September 21st 2008, the UN Systems turns its attention to the role of peacekeepers in promoting and strengthening human rights. Adding its voice to multitude calling for an end to war and conflict throughout the world, UN-INSTRAW emphasizes the crucial role that gender equality plays in making peacekeeping more effective, sustainable and just.

For at least 10 years grassroots women, particularly in Africa, have struggled to get the world to understand AIDS as a development issue – which is how they experience it every day – to have their lived realities inform global policy on AIDS, and to get their contributions to fighting AIDS in their communities recognized local to global.
