New AU Chair First Woman To Hold Post

The new chair of the African Union (AU) is expected to stress economic growth and development, as well as women’s rights.

In Sunday’s election, South African Minister of Home Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma defeated incumbent Jean Ping at the AU meeting in Addis Ababa. She is the first woman to hold the post.

South African Ambassador-at-Large Lindiwe Zulu praised the new chair, saying she will bring much to the post. This includes setting priorities for improving and building infrastructure, peacebuilding, greater involvement of women in politics and other issues and good relations between North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
