AWID condemns attack on young WHRD in Pakistan
Attack on Malala Yousufzai
AWID strongly condemns the attempted assassination of 14-year-old Pakistani school girl and activist, Malala Yousufzai by Taliban militants. We urge the authorities to bring to account those responsible for this attack and bring an end to the violence against women human rights defenders in Pakistan. We stand in solidarity with Malala Yousufzai and wish her a full and quick recovery.
As reported by the FIDH/OMCT’s Observatory for the protection of Human Rights Defenders, in the afternoon of October 9, 2012, Ms. Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head in her school van. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. Ms. Yousafzai was targeted for advocating the right of girls to education, and for exposing the daily violence and intimidation after the Taliban took control of the Swat valley.
