AWID Letter To PM Erdoğan Regarding The Bill To Severely Restrict Abortion In Turkey
AWID sent a letter to the prime minister of Turkey in response to recent statements in which he equated abortion with murder, and the news that his party was about to introduce legislation that would severely restrict abortion rights in Turkey (reducing the time limit from 10 to 4 weeks, which would be an effective ban).
AWID called on everyone to send letters to the Prime Minister of Turkey after his disturbing and harmful statements that indicated the anti-choice position recently taken by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). The Turkish parliament was expected to debate the bill that would severely restrict access to abortion in June, but has since dropped the bill. However, recent news indicates that restrictions on abortion and other sexual and reproductive health rights have been implemented and are being considered, so vigilance is still important.
