This is the reason that the Mediterranean Women's Fund decided to make the theme of the 2012 competition the bodies of women in motion in the Mediterranean basin. On 28 April 2012 journalist and human rights defender Ms Regina Martínez Pérez was found dead in her home in the city of Xalapa, in Veracruz. Regina Martínez Pérez was a correspondent with the weekly publication Proceso in which she addressed issues relating to drug cartels and the links between organised criminal groups and government officials.

The UK’s Girls’ Education Challenge will support NGOs, charities and the private sector who can find better ways to provide education opportunities to marginalised girls in the poorest countries in Africa and Asia.
