CPD

Every week we profile a different institutional AWID member. If you would like to be profiled here, please send your biographical information to membership@awid.org

Católicas por el Derecho a Decidir (Catholics for the Right to Decide, CDD) is an autonomous movement of Catholic individuals committed to the defense of women’s rights, especially sexual and reproductive rights, and a life free of violence and discrimination. CDD works for gender equality and women’s citizenship to counter religious fundamentalisms from a theological and feminist perspective.

CDD works constantly with state agencies, especially the Ministries of Health and Justice, the Argentine Chancellery, the Ministry of Human Rights, and legislators to advocate for universal access to sexual and reproductive rights. It has also provided graduate courses on sexual and reproductive rights to health providers at national universities. CDD’s research department, created to promote reflection and discussion on women’s situation in the contemporary sociopolitical context, particularly with regard to sexuality and reproduction, plays an essential role providing arguments and analysis to various sectors. As a member of Argentina’s official delegation, CDD has also engaged in follow-up to international UN conferences such as Cairo and Beijing, where women’s human rights have been on the table.

Regionally, CDD’s efforts are coordinated through the Latin American Network of Católicas por el Derecho a Decidir (CDD/LA Network). It consists of twelve CDDs in different countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Peru as well as Spain, associate member) working jointly to achieve a greater impact in the region.

CDD envisions a society where women can fully exercise their sexual and reproductive rights and enjoy their citizenship before State and Church; where women are heard and respected, and their moral ability to make ethical decisions over their lives is recognized.
