The word “Galang” signifies respect for human rights and human diversity, which lies at the core of GALANG’s struggle for equality and justice. Since 2008, GALANG is registered in the Philippines as a non-profit and a lesbian-initiated, lesbian-run feminist human rights organization. GALANG aspires to be a catalyst for the empowerment of economically disadvantaged Filipino lesbians, bisexual women, and trans men (LBTs). To this end GALANG works towards the attainment of social and economic equity (access and control) and to create an enabling policy environment in support of empowerment and equity among LBTs in urban poor communities. This two-fold mission seeks to work towards social and economic equity for Filipino LBTs by confronting the issues of homophobia and discrimination, poverty, violence, rape, suicide, unemployment, and lack of access to health care. At the core of GALANG’s evidence-based advocacy is the identification and development of a cadre of local LBT leaders in poor communities nationwide who have sufficient self-confidence and capacities as LBT human rights advocates.
