Individual Member: Njeri Kabiru
Every week we profile a different individual AWID member. If you would like to be profiled here, please send your biographical information to membership@awid.org
Njeri was born in Nairobi Kenya and currently still resides there. She attended Daystar University and completed a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Management and Community Development. Njeri is presently enrolled in a Masters of Arts Degree in Gender and Development at the University of Nairobi. She is involved in raising awareness about the Kenyan Constitution (passed in 2010) with an emphasis on female representation in the new government structures. Njeri identifies as a feminist and likes to keep herself informed about developments in the “feminist world and to share that information with others. She believes that it is important to at least spark a discussion about women’s rights and gender equality. In her current work she realized that often old patriarchal and misogynistic beliefs, besides their mere existence, continue to be perpetuated as the only true position. Therefore she sees a need to continue the discussions around women’s entitlement to equal opportunities, respect and non-discrimination in all spheres of life. Njeri’s dream is to see women’s mental and emotional liberation in order to question the structures which often keep them suppressed. She also envisions a world in which women are able to access all opportunities life offers and to identify who they want to be without any limitations.
